Committee

At IAM we take a collaborative approach to investment and financial planning matters. While many firms have an investment committee that meets to discuss which investments should be recommended for client accounts, we go one step further. Our committee considers not only investment but also financial planning matters. We realize that what may be an appropriate investment for one client may not be appropriate for another.

With this in mind, our committee consists of experts in financial planning and investor psychology, as well as investment matters.

The IAM Investment Committee

Tom Zachystal, CFA, CFP®, EA

Mr. Zachystal has over ten years of portfolio management experience and focuses on investment research and on identifying long-term trends in investment markets. His experience as a Chartered Financial Analyst helps IAM to create portfolios that are optimized for each client's risk and return expectations as well as for current market conditions.

Tom's approach to equity investing is value-driven; his research is focused on identifying companies with good long-term prospects but whose stock price has suffered as a result of transitory issues. Tom also looks for investible long-term trends such as the growth of wealth in emerging market economies, or commodity demand growth, and positions client portfolios to take advantage of such trends.

Scott Schwartz, CFP®, CIMA®

Mr. Schwarz has over twenty years of financial planning experience and focuses on long-term asset allocation. His primary consideration is to ensure that his clients' investment portfolios reflect their risk/return expectations and meet their investment goals.

Scott has valuable expertise in constructing bond ladders and other income producing investments for individuals who are dependant upon their portfolios for continuing income. He has a long-term approach to investment management and manages risk by constructing portfolios that are optimized for risk and return based upon efficient market theory. Scott believes in managing portfolio risk through proper asset allocation, rebalancing, and the use of low-cost pooled investments such as exchange-traded funds.

Ira Fateman, CFP®

Mr. Fateman is an instructor in Financial Planning at UC Berkeley and has an in-depth understanding of investor psychology as well as over twenty years experience in investment trading and portfolio management. He started his career as a stockbroker in 1984, working for several Wall Street firms before becoming a Registered Investment Advisor in 1999 and founding his own investment advisory firm.

In addition to investment management experience, Ira also has extensive expertise in employer granted stock options and in estate, investment, and retirement planning. Ira is an active member of the Financial Planning Association and serves on the Pro Bono committee of the San Francisco chapter.
